Japan Food Review: Monsters University Mike and Sully Steamed Buns

To celebrate the release of Disney Pixar’s Monsters University, Family Mart will be selling nikuman (Japanese Steamed Meat Buns) inspired by the film's Protagonist Mike and Sully.

Judging by the design quality, I guess Family Mart didn't have the same $200 million budget as the film

The Buns are sold at Family Mart convenience stores nationwide and are "limited" to 500,000, each costing ¥190 (approx $1.50US).

Don't let the colors fool you. If you were expecting a lime flavored Mike and a bubblegum flavored Sully, you will be highly disappointed. These are savory meat buns and sweet candy-like buns.

Yep, just meat inside

Sully and Mike come in two different flavors. The Sully Bun is a soy sauce flavor, whereas the Mike bun has a salt-based flavour.

soy! soy!

The dye has no affect on the taste. It tastes just like a normal meat bun. All the appeal is purely cosmetic. By no means does it taste bad. But considering it costs nearly twice as much as a normal bun, I was expecting a little more of a surprise.

Unless you just love Mike and Sully so much that you want to bite into their heads, you're better off sticking with a normal bun.
